MODERNIZING AROMATHERAPY

Essential oils have been used for various therapeutic, ritualistic, spiritual, and other practices since ancient civilizations. In the first century, Disoscorides, a Greek physician and the father of pharmacognosy, first wrote about the healing properties of oils. In the eleventh century, Ibn Sina, a Persian polymath and the father of early modern medicine, refined the process of distilling essential oils.

In the past 10 years, numerous studies have been published proving the clinical effects of aromatherapy with scientific data. The therapeutic efficacy of essential oils is founded on knowledge and familiarity of their biochemical components. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Committee of Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) have validated 13 essential oils on the basis of clinical studies providing a sufficient level of proof.

FRAGRANCE FOCUSED APPROACH TO MENTAL HEALTH

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils for therapeutic benefit as the scent molecules travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain, impacting the emotional center of the brain, known as the amygdala.

Modern scientific aromatherapy is based on comprehensive knowledge of the versatile virtues of essential oils that are comprised of active aromatic molecules. Directly affecting the limbic system, the center of emotions and memory, essential oils can also be used for their fragrances. Integrating the impact and usefulness of essential oils and fragrance on the olfactive system, aromatherapy is particularly suited to treat mental health.
